Not every wisdom tooth needs removing
Plenty of wisdom teeth erupt without trouble and are best left alone. Problems arise when there is not enough room: the tooth becomes impacted, only partly erupts and traps bacteria, repeatedly inflames, or presses against and damages the molar in front.
An X-ray shows the position of the roots and their relationship to nearby structures, which determines both whether removal is advisable and how the procedure is approached. You are told what the imaging shows and what recovery is realistically like before deciding.
