An operculectomy removes the flap of gum sitting over a partly erupted tooth, where it traps food and bacteria and repeatedly becomes inflamed.

Removing the trap
When a tooth erupts only partway — most often a lower wisdom tooth — a flap of gum can remain over part of its surface. That flap forms a pocket that is almost impossible to clean, so debris and bacteria collect underneath and the area becomes swollen and painful, sometimes repeatedly. The condition is called pericoronitis.
An operculectomy removes that flap under local anaesthetic, so there is no longer a pocket to trap anything. Where the underlying tooth is itself impacted and unlikely to erupt properly, removing the tooth may be the more lasting answer — we will tell you which we think applies and why.
