The temporomandibular joint connects the lower jaw to the skull, and it works alongside a set of powerful muscles. Pain can come from the joint itself, from those muscles, from clenching or grinding, from how the teeth meet, or from a combination — and treating the wrong one achieves nothing.
So assessment comes first: how far the jaw opens, where it deviates, what is tender, what the joint sounds like, how the teeth meet, and what your history suggests. Management usually starts conservatively — an appliance, habit awareness, adjusting how the teeth contact — because those measures are reversible and often sufficient.
